Responding when communities need us most.

For nearly two decades, HARO has responded to drought, flooding, displacement, food insecurity, conflict, and other humanitarian emergencies across the Horn of Africa.

  1. 2011Famine response: 20 emergency staff and 10 volunteers deployed across Mogadishu and southern Somalia, feeding hundreds of displaced families with partners.
  2. 2012Joint flood response with the American Refugee Committee for 21,000 people displaced by the Shabelle river in Beledweyne — relief items, a medical post and child-safe spaces.
  3. 2013Cyclone relief across Puntland after the Minnesota Somali community raised $80,000 and handed HARO $60,000 to deliver directly.
  4. 2014Gedo drought: water trucked to nine villages and food rations for 850 families.
  5. 2017Drought response across Sool, Sanaag, Mudug, Bay, Bakool and Gedo — 90+ water tankers in Sool alone, food for 400 families in Xudur and 2,000+ in Mudug — plus relief for victims of the Mogadishu bombing.
  6. 2018Gu-season floods: tents and mosquito nets for 1,000+ families in Beledweyne, food in Baardheere and Dolow; food for 250+ families in Awdal after Cyclone Sagar.
  7. 2020Relief kits of blankets, mosquito nets and insect spray for families displaced when floods submerged 75% of Afgooye.
  8. 2021Drought emergency appeals for Gedo and eastern Somaliland, and COVID-19 equipment for De Martino Hospital.
  9. 2022After fire destroyed the Waaheen market in Hargeisa on April 1, HARO delivered $974,710 in relief from the Somali diaspora in the USA to affected traders, and responded to families hit by the October KM5 bombing in Mogadishu.
  10. 2023Medicines and supplies delivered to hospitals across Sool region — Laascaanood, Garagar, Fayo and others — as conflict displaced thousands.
